Shoulder Labral Tears

Anatomy

The shoulder labrum is a type of cartilage that surrounds the shoulder socket (glenoid). The glenoid itself is relatively flat and the labrum contour helps to deepen the socket, enhancing the shoulders stability.

A Shoulder Labral tear is quite common and typically results from injury such as a fall or shoulder dislocation, but can also occur from repetitive work or sports activities.

Symptoms

The primary symptom of a shoulder labral tear can be pain, often deeply located within the joint. The pain is frequently intense and can be accompanied by mechanical symptoms such as clicking or catching. Those patients who sustain a labral tear as a part of a dislocation event may additionally have symptoms of instability.
